Explanation

Many praise this as one of Valluvar's most progressive verses. It says there is no use in confining a woman and guarding her; the best protection is that she guards herself by the firmness of mind called 'nirai'.

'Sirai' means shutting up in the house, hard restrictions and guards. 'Nirai' is the firmness that holds the mind back from wandering wherever thought goes. Parimelazhagar gives the same sense. That the mind turning toward wrong can be checked only by the mind, and not by outer guarding, is Valluvar's psychological insight.

The verse does not wholly deny protection. Protection from harm is needed. But it says true protection must come from within. One who lives under another's guard may stumble the moment the guard is gone; one who has learned to rule herself will stand firm wherever she is.

Another meaning is trust. To distrust women and subject them to guards is an insult to them. To trust, to teach and to let them grow is good upbringing.

All parents and families may think on this. For children, education and good values are a longer-lasting protection than restrictions.

In the Ramayana, Sita in the Ashoka grove stands as an example. The rakshasi guards were there, but what protected her was the firmness of her heart.

A story

Sita in the Ashoka Grove

The Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana tells of Sita's life in the Ashoka grove. Ravana carried Sita off to Lanka and kept her in the Ashoka grove. Rakshasi guards stood all around. Ravana came from time to time, threatening and tempting her to accept him. Sita would not look at his face; she spoke with a blade of grass placed between herself and him, a single straw being the barrier between her and him.

As the two-month limit Ravana had set drew near, Sita was in deep grief. At that point Hanuman, hidden on a tree branch, sang the story of Rama. Then he showed Rama's ring and won her trust.

Hanuman said, "Mother, climb on my back. I shall cross this sea and place you with Rama this very moment." Sita praised his love and strength, but declined. "I will not of my own will touch another man. When Ravana seized me, I was helpless. I will not do it of my own accord now. It is Rama's own glory that he come, conquer Lanka and take me back," she said, as Valmiki tells it.

She was not protected by the guards of the rakshasis. What truly protected her was the firmness of her heart. That same firmness kept her faith in Rama. Among the rakshasis, Trijata, who was kind, was a comfort to her.

Hanuman told Rama what had happened. Rama came with his army, defeated Ravana, and rescued Sita.

The message of this verse is this: guarding may exist outside, but the guard that lasts is the firmness of the heart.

How can I help the people I care for to grow in inner strength rather than simply guarding them?
