Explanation

This verse lines up four qualities of a good wife of the house: guarding herself, caring for her husband, guarding her good name, and never slackening. One who does these, says Valluvar, deserves the word 'pen', woman.

For 'tharkaaththu', Parimelazhagar takes it as guarding her chastity. Today's commentaries give it the wider sense of caring for her body, mind and self-respect. It is true that one who does not care for herself cannot care for others.

For 'sorkaaththu', the common explanation is guarding her fame. Others see it as guarding her word, that is, the promises she has given and the name of the family. The two ideas are close. To guard one's word means to fulfil what one has said and not to speak ill of others.

The word 'sorvilaal' is important. Household duties are not done in a day; they run on for years. What is praised here is the steadiness to do them without weariness and with alertness.

These four qualities apply to men as well. Guarding oneself, caring for one's partner, guarding one's name and not slackening are good qualities for anyone.

In the Mahabharata, Gandhari is shown as such a woman. Resolving not to see a world her husband could not see, she bound her eyes with cloth.

A story

Gandhari Who Bound Her Eyes

The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata speaks of Gandhari. A princess of Gandhara, she was given in marriage to Dhritarashtra, king of the Kurus. When she learned that Dhritarashtra was blind from birth, she resolved that she too would not see the world her husband could not see. She bound her eyes with a silk cloth and never removed the cover for the rest of her life.

Her chastity and austerity are praised throughout the Mahabharata. She had the strength of tapas, but she did not use it for her own fame. In the palace of Hastinapura she looked after her husband and reproved her sons.

When the Pandavas were humiliated in the game of dice, she is said to have pressed Dhritarashtra to give back all that was taken, saying that this injustice would destroy the Kuru line. Before the war, when Duryodhana came to ask her blessing for victory, she told him the truth: "Where there is dharma, there is victory." She did not bless her son falsely out of a mother's love.

When the war ended and all her hundred sons were dead, she sank into grief. Yet to the end she stood beside her husband. She went with Dhritarashtra to the forest and lived the life of renunciation with him. The two passed away together in the woods.

Gandhari guarded herself, cared for her husband, guarded her word and truth, and stood without slackening all her life. Her life becomes a commentary on all four lines of this verse.

There is also a gentle question in the story. Many reflect whether, by binding her eyes, she failed to see her children's faults. It also teaches that a true companion should stand by her husband with eyes open.

In which of my duties do I keep going steadily, and where do I let my attention slip?
