Explanation

This verse states, in the language of poetry, the highest ideal of a wife in ancient times. She who holds her husband as her god and worships him as she rises in the morning, if she says "Rain, fall!", the rain falls. It is an exaggerated praise: that nature itself bows before her purity.

One thing is to be noted in reading this verse. Valluvar himself gave his entire first chapter to the worship of God. So it is not fitting to take 'theyvam thozhaal' as denying God. Parimelazhagar and other commentators explain it as one who holds firmly that her husband is her god. Some modern readings see it as a poetic exaggeration showing the wife's complete devotion to her household duty.

The real centre of the verse is the Indian belief that a woman's spiritual strength, her pure love and devotion, can bring even nature into harmony. In Tamil tradition it is common to link rain with right conduct. One may also remember the chapter 'The Excellence of Rain', which praises the rain.

How may we see it today? When two people honour each other to the point of treating each other as sacred, that home flourishes of itself. The habit of rising in the morning and first giving the other a greeting and thanks has the power to change the atmosphere of a home.

So the idea is the strength of a relationship in which each deeply respects the other. A home that has this strength gives benefit like rain, which is the verse's beautiful imagining.

A story

The Night the Sun Did Not Rise

This story is recorded in works such as the Markandeya Purana. A brahmin named Kaushika was weakened in body by illness; his wife was Shandili. Even when her husband was angry and in distress she tended him as a god. One night Kaushika wished to go somewhere. Being unable to walk, he was carried by Shandili on her shoulders through the dark.

On the way lay the sage Mandavya, impaled on a stake on a false accusation. In the darkness Kaushika's foot struck him. In pain Mandavya cursed, "Whoever has touched me and caused this pain shall die before the sun rises."

Shandili heard it. "If my husband's life is to go, then let the sun not rise," she declared by the power of her austerity. The sun did not rise. The night grew long. Sacrifices and daily duties stopped. The devas too were afraid, and went to Brahma with their complaint.

Brahma told them to seek the help of Anasuya, wife of the sage Atri. Anasuya met Shandili and spoke to her with respect for her devotion. "The world suffers. Let the sun rise. Even if your husband dies, I shall bring him back to life by the power of my austerity," she promised.

Shandili agreed. The sun rose, and Kaushika fell to the ground and died. Anasuya kept her word, brought him back to life, and gave him a body free of disease, says the Purana.

The tale is told in the language of divine faith. It points to the belief that love and steadfastness can gain the power to stop nature itself. It also reminds us that Shandili turned her strength to the good of her world as well.
