Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha KandaSugriva's Refuge on Rishyamuka
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda. Driven out by his brother Vali, Sugriva fled across the whole world but found safety nowhere; Vali followed him everywhere.
Then Sugriva remembered a fact. Long before, when Vali had hurled away the body of the asura Dundubhi, drops of blood fell on the hermitage of the sage Matanga. The angered sage had cursed: "If Vali sets foot on Mount Rishyamuka, his head will shatter."
Knowing the nature of that place, Sugriva settled on Rishyamuka with his ministers, including Hanuman. There he was safe, and it was there that he met Rama. Choosing his place with knowledge saved both his life and his future.
