Taittiriya Samhita; Shatapatha BrahmanaTvashtr's Slip of Accent
From the Vedic tradition, a story told in the Taittiriya Samhita and the Shatapatha Brahmana. Tvashtr, the divine craftsman, angry with Indra, performed a sacrifice so that a son would be born who would slay Indra.
In the sacrifice he chanted the mantra "Indrashatrur vardhasva". For it to mean "grow as the slayer of Indra", the accent of the word had to fall in one place. But he carelessly placed the accent elsewhere, and the meaning became "grow as one whose slayer is Indra".
Vritra, born from that sacrifice, grew mighty, but in the end fell to Indra himself. A single careless sound turned the whole purpose of a sacrifice upside down.
