Explanation

'Kondranna innaa' is a harm as severe as killing. Even if someone has done such a harm, if we recall a single good deed he did earlier, the harm perishes, says Valluvar. 'Kedum' means will be destroyed or vanish.

This is the peak of the previous verse. In 108 he said forget a wrong the same day. Here he says even if the wrong is no ordinary one but equal to murder, one may forget it. The way is to recall one good thing he did.

'Ondru nandru' is a single good. Even many are not needed; one is enough. The human mind remembers harm more than good. Deliberately recalling one good thing balances the mind.

A question arises: must even a cruel harm be forgiven? Commentators do not take this as a command that denies justice. They take it that enmity should leave the mind, and that punishment, if needed, should be without hatred.

Here Valluvar shows a way to break the circle of revenge. Hatred breeds more hatred. The memory of one good stops that circle.

Yudhishthira's conduct in the Mahabharata agrees in spirit. Duryodhana had many times done terrible harm to the Pandavas. Yet when the Gandharvas captured him, Yudhishthira sent Bhima and Arjuna to rescue him. The memory of kinship won over hatred.

This episode does not fit the verse's words entirely, but it fits its spirit. A vision that seeks the good even in an enemy becomes dharma.

A story

Yudhishthira Rescues Duryodhana

This scene occurs in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. The Pandavas, defeated at dice, were living their twelve years in the forest. Duryodhana wished to rejoice at seeing them suffer. To display his wealth he came with Karna, Shakuni and a great army near the Dvaita forest.

There the Gandharva king Chitrasena was camping with his company. A fight broke out between Duryodhana's soldiers and the Gandharvas. The Gandharvas won. Karna fled the field. Duryodhana was taken prisoner.

His ministers ran to Yudhishthira and asked for help. Bhima laughed: "The Gandharvas have done what we should have done." Yudhishthira rebuked him.

Yudhishthira's words are famous. In effect: "When we quarrel among ourselves we are five and they are a hundred. But when outsiders attack, we are a hundred and five." The honour of the family must be protected, was his view.

Yudhishthira sent Arjuna, Bhima and the twins. Arjuna fought the Gandharvas, made peace since Chitrasena was a friend, and freed Duryodhana. Duryodhana, bowing in shame, came before Yudhishthira.

The Pandavas had done Duryodhana no great wrong; he was the one who had done terrible harm to them: poisoned food, the house of lac, the dice plot, the insult to Draupadi. Yet Yudhishthira forgave and protected him.

What was in Yudhishthira's mind was one memory: that he was of their family. This differs slightly from the words of verse 109. The verse asks us to recall one good deed; here it is the memory of kinship. But in both we see a mind that does not lift enmity higher.

The sadness of the story is that Duryodhana was not reformed by that good. Yet Yudhishthira did not leave his dharma. The fruit of a good act lies not in another's change but in the purity of our own mind.

To reflect on

Can I find one good deed in the person who hurt me most, and let that memory soften my anger?
