Gratitude · Seynnandri Aridhal

This chapter honours the habit of remembering the help others have given us. A kindness done without expectation and at the right moment outweighs the world; the noble take even a millet-sized favour as big as a palmyra tree. To forget a kindness is not good; to forget a harm at once is good. Every sin has some remedy, says Valluvar, but none for the one who kills gratitude.

Introduction

After sweet words, Valluvar turns to a principle that holds every relationship together: gratitude. 'Seynnandri' means the good that someone has done for us, and 'aridhal' means to know and remember it. To know a kindness is to keep it in mind and to answer it, at the right time and in the right way. So gratitude is not only a personal virtue; it is a pillar that bears up the community.

The ten verses show different faces of gratitude. A help given without any earlier obligation cannot be repaid even by heaven and earth (101). A help given at the right time, though small, is bigger than the world (102). A help done without thought of return is greater than the ocean (103). Those who understand benefit take even a millet-sized good as big as a palmyra tree (104). The worth of a help is not in the help itself but in the nobility of the one who receives it (105). Do not forget the friendship of the faultless, and do not abandon those who stood by you in trouble (106). One who wiped away your affliction will be remembered through seven births (107). To forget a kindness is not good; to forget a wrong the same day is good (108). Even an injury equal to murder dissolves when one recalls a single kindness from the doer (109). For every sin there is some escape; for the one who kills gratitude there is none (110).

Commentators differ in places. In verse 101, 'seyyamal seydha udhavi' is generally taken as a help done to someone who had done nothing for the helper before; some take it as a help done without expecting any return.

In the Hindu tradition gratitude is among the highest dharmas, and the debts one owes are named: to gods, sages, ancestors and guests. The Ramayana's Rama to Hanuman, Karna's loyalty to Duryodhana, Sugriva's forgetfulness and repentance, the sacrifice of the sage Dadhichi, the rescue of Gajendra and Krishna's kindness to Kuchela all show the glory of gratitude and the harm of ingratitude. The Mahabharata's Shanti Parva says there is atonement for every sin but none for the one who betrays a benefactor, which echoes Valluvar closely.

In our days the word 'thanks' has shrunk to a tiny symbol in a text message. Valluvar asks for more: to remember the teacher, the neighbour, the doctor, the friend and the parent whose help brought us here. A small habit of naming, each day, one person and what they did for us will soften the heart.

Chapter story

Rama's Embrace for Hanuman

In Valmiki's Ramayana, at the start of the Yuddha Kanda, Hanuman returns from Lanka and tells Rama that he has seen Sita. Having leapt over the hundred-yojana ocean, searched every street of Lanka, found Sita in the Ashoka grove, comforted her, and received her crest jewel, he came back with the token. When Rama took it in his hand, tears welled in his eyes.

Hanuman's act was no ordinary favour. While the other vanaras stood disheartened on the shore, he alone leapt across and brought the news. He expected no reward. Rama had done nothing for him earlier. The help came unasked, as verse 101 describes: a favour done when nothing had been done for the helper.

Rama was moved. With nothing in hand to give, he embraced Hanuman tightly. Valmiki puts into his mouth words to this effect: "I have nothing to give in return for this rare deed; this embrace is all my wealth." A great prince of Ayodhya showed his thanks with a bodily gesture.

Later tradition continues the debt. Rama is said to have told Hanuman that for each of his services he would owe a life and that would still not suffice, and that he wished those services to remain in him and himself to stay forever a debtor. For Rama, an unpaid debt was gratitude in its fullness.

At the coronation, Sita gave Hanuman a necklace of pearls, which Valmiki mentions near the end of the Yuddha Kanda. Hanuman did not look at the gift as mere jewellery. A later popular tradition adds that he valued nothing that did not carry Rama's name; that attitude shows the nobility of the receiver. We may join this with verse 105: the measure of a help depends on the greatness of the one who receives it.

Three lessons come from this story. First, the humility of the one who did the great deed: Hanuman said it was done by Rama's grace, not by his own strength. Second, the gratitude of the receiver: Rama did not hide his debt. Third, thanks need not always be in goods; an embrace and a memory from the heart are enough.

It applies to our lives too. If someone helped us in a hard hour, to visit them and say what they did for us will bring them great joy. A help that cannot be repaid in money can be honoured only by gratitude. Rama and Hanuman show us the way.
