Mahabharata, Vana ParvaKaushika and the Righteous Butcher
From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. Kaushika was a brahmin well versed in the Vedas. One day a crane in a tree dropped its droppings on him; he glared at it in anger, and his gaze alone burned it to death.
Later, when he went begging for alms, a housewife brought him food only after she had finished serving her husband. He grew angry. She said calmly, 'I am not a crane; your anger cannot burn me. To learn the truth of dharma, go to Dharmavyadha in Mithila.'
When Kaushika went, he found that Dharmavyadha was a meat seller. Yet he cared for his parents as gods and lived honestly by his trade. From him Kaushika learned the subtlety of dharma: for one who knows the Vedas, conduct matters even more.
