Explanation

Not desiring another's wife, says Avvaiyar, is true dharma. It is a foundation of household life. One who crosses this line destroys both his own family and another's.

Thiruvalluvar praises it as true manliness: the great courage of not looking at another's wife is not only virtue but the fullness of good conduct (Kural 148).

Mahabharata, Vana Parva

Arjuna and Urvashi

From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. During the exile, Arjuna went to Indra's heaven to receive divine weapons. There the celestial nymph Urvashi fell in love with him and came to him one night.

Arjuna folded his hands and bowed: 'You were the consort of Pururavas, the ancestor of my line. To me you are like a mother.' However she pressed, he refused. Angered, Urvashi cursed him: 'For a year you will live as a eunuch.'

That very curse later helped him live in disguise as Brihannala in Virata's city. For one who guarded dharma, even a curse became a blessing.
