and then eaten

Explanation

A true meal, says Avvaiyar, is one earned by one's own toil. However comfortable it is to live on another's labour, there is no fulfilment in it.

No work is lowly. Any work done honestly and offered to God becomes worship.

Periya Puranam, life of Thirukkurippu Thondar

The Washerman Saint of Kanchi

From the Periya Puranam. Thirukkurippu Thondar of Kanchipuram was a washerman. He lived by his own labour and made it his service to wash the clothes of Shiva's devotees lovingly, free of charge.

To test him, the Lord himself came as a poor devotee with a single torn garment. 'Wash it and have it dry by evening,' he said. The saint washed it, but a sudden heavy rain fell and it would not dry.

Grieving that he had failed to keep his word, the saint was about to dash his head against the washing stone. At that moment the Lord's hand rose from the stone and stopped him. The Lord himself upheld the one who had made his labour his worship.
