Explanation

Avvaiyar sets aside the high and low that come by birth. Measured by justice, there are only two kinds of people in the world: those who give and those who do not. The givers are the great, and those who do not give are the lowly. That, she says, is how things truly stand.

This is a challenge to anyone proud of their birth. What measures a person is not the family they were born into but whether their hand is open. A poor person who gives is great; a rich person who does not is small.

Giving is not only money. Time, effort, a kind word and a share of one's food are all gifts. It is the habit of giving that raises a person.

Mahabharata, Vana Parva

King Shibi and the Dove

From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. To test King Shibi's generosity, Agni took the form of a dove and Indra the form of a hawk. Fleeing the hawk, the dove flew into the king's lap for refuge.

The hawk said, 'That is my prey. If you take it from me, I will die of hunger.' Shibi answered, 'I will not give up one who has come to me for shelter. In its place I will give you flesh from my own body.'

The dove was set on one pan of a balance, and on the other the king placed flesh cut from his own thigh. However much he added, the dove's side stayed heavier. At last Shibi climbed onto the pan himself. Then Agni and Indra appeared in their own forms and blessed him, and his body was made whole again.

Shibi's greatness did not come from his royal line. It came from a hand willing to give even itself.

To reflect on

If someone measured you by what you give rather than where you were born, what would they find?
