Periya Puranam, life of Thirunavukkarasar (Appar)The Stone That Floated
From the Periya Puranam. When Thirunavukkarasar, known as Appar, left the Jain fold and returned to Shaivism, the Pallava king was enraged. He had him shut in a burning lime kiln, fed poisoned food and charged by a wild elephant. Each time, Appar thought of Shiva and survived.
At last the king had him tied to a great stone and thrown into the middle of the sea. Even as he sank, Appar was not afraid. He sang the hymn that ends each verse, 'the good companion is Namasivaya'.
With that song the stone floated like a raft. His bonds loosened, and the waves carried him to shore, where he landed near Thiruppadiripuliyur. The Periya Puranam says the king himself, hearing of this wonder, later embraced Shaivism.
Appar's life is the proof of Avvaiyar's words: those who keep the five syllables in mind meet no danger.
