From the Valmiki Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda)The Forgetful Friend
From the Valmiki Ramayana. Sugriva, driven out by his brother Vali, made a pact of friendship with Rama with the sacred fire as witness. "I will defeat Vali and restore your kingdom and your wife," said Rama. "My whole army of vanaras will help you find Sita," said Sugriva. Rama kept his word, and Sugriva became king of Kishkindha.
The rainy season began, and they agreed the search would start when the rains ended. But when the season passed, Sugriva, lost in the pleasures of the palace, forgot his promise. Lakshmana saw Rama pining for Sita in their mountain cave, and in anger he went to Kishkindha.
The vanaras trembled at the twang of Lakshmana's bow. Tara came forward and calmed his anger with gentle words. Sugriva saw his fault and was ashamed: "I owe this throne to Rama's help. To forget it was a grave wrong." At once he sent messengers to every quarter, gathered countless vanaras and began the search for Sita. That search is what carried Hanuman to Lanka.
A friendship that goes no deeper than smiles is a sorrow; a friendship that owns its fault and rises again to its duty is true friendship.
