Meaning

Giving counsel to the unprincipled is painful; even the finest books are a pain to those who do not care for them; friendship with those whose deeds are vile is painful; and wheeling a horse in circles at a narrow outlet is painful too.

Explanation

Giving counsel to the unprincipled is like pouring water into the ear of one who will not listen; only sorrow is left to the speaker. In the same way even the finest books are a burden to those who have no wish to read them. To receive knowledge, the mind must first be eager.

The third line is friendship with those whose deeds are vile, which drags us along their road. Commentators read the fourth line in several ways; the shared sense is a risky act that ignores its setting, like wheeling a horse or chariot in circles at a narrow outlet.

Krishna's mission of peace shows that not even the finest envoy can help one who refuses to hear good counsel. When we give advice today we should sense the listener's state of mind, and when we receive it, listen with an open mind.

From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva)

Krishna's Mission of Peace

From the Mahabharata. Even after the thirteen years of exile were over, Duryodhana refused to return the Pandavas' kingdom. As a last attempt to avert war, Krishna himself went to Hastinapura as envoy. Before he left, Yudhishthira said, "We do not need the whole kingdom. Even five villages will do. Let there be no war."

In the royal court Krishna spoke calmly: "Duryodhana, war between kinsmen will destroy both sides. The Pandavas are your brothers. Give them what is theirs, or at least five villages. That is for your good too." Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and his mother Gandhari all urged the same, and Dhritarashtra pleaded with his son.

But Duryodhana would not listen. "I will not give up even as much land as the point of a needle without a war," he declared, and stormed out of the hall. Worse, he plotted to seize Krishna, the envoy himself. Then Krishna revealed his cosmic form. The assembly trembled, and even the blind Dhritarashtra was granted sight for a few moments to behold it.

Even then Duryodhana did not change. Peace failed, and war became certain.

Counsel to the unprincipled is a sorrow; even when God himself comes to speak it, it brings no fruit to one unwilling to hear.

To reflect on

When someone gives you advice that is bitter but good, do you hear it with an open mind?
