Explanation

Niraiyutaimai means being full of good qualities and having firmness of mind. Some commentators take nirai as the self-command of character, others as the completeness of all virtues. In this verse Valluvar says that if all one's good qualities are to remain with him without leaving, the basic safeguard is forbearance. A person may have knowledge, learning, generosity and conduct, but without forbearance one moment of anger can shatter them all.

We might compare it to the roof of a house. Though the walls are strong, a house without a roof is soaked and ruined in the rain. Forbearance is the roof of the other virtues. However fine a person's nature, if he lacks the patience to bear insult, delay or failure, those fine qualities may be lost.

This is easy to see in present life. A skilled employee who cannot bear his superior's remark flares up in a moment and loses his job. A kind father who loses patience over a small matter loses his children's confidence. Forbearance is what prevents such losses. So the person who wants to be complete in character must first learn to bear. Every other virtue then has a place to rest. Every small test of patience, in traffic, in a queue or with a child's questions, adds to this guarded fullness.

A story

Yudhishthira's Patience

This is the dialogue between Draupadi and Yudhishthira in the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. Having lost the game of dice, the Pandavas had to spend twelve years in the forest and a thirteenth incognito. Draupadi had been insulted in the assembly. In the forest they lived in huts.

One day Draupadi came to Yudhishthira in tears. "My lord, why should one who lives a righteous life like yours suffer so? Duryodhana flourishes through injustice. Should we not avenge those who humiliated me in the assembly? Why do you still forbear? Your brothers are mighty. Rise in anger."

Yudhishthira answered calmly. "Panchali, anger is the great enemy that destroys a person. From anger sin is born, from anger killing happens, and the angry forget their very station. Forbearance is dharma, forbearance is truth, forbearance is the Veda. One who forbears wins both this world and the next." He also recalled the conversation between Prahlada and the asura king Bali, explaining when to forbear and when to punish.

Bhima too tried to goad his brother. "With our strength we could raise an army now and recover the kingdom." Yudhishthira said to him, "The word we gave is a vow. If we break it everything collapses. If we wait patiently, time will turn in our favour."

To some, this patience of Yudhishthira may have seemed weakness. But in those thirteen years his composure did not waver. Many sages and Brahmins lived with him in the forest. Later dharma stood on his side.

Yudhishthira held to forbearance so that his fulness of character would never leave him. That patience made the world honour him as Dharmaputra.
