Explanation

This verse shows two steps of forbearance. The first is poruththal: when one has the power to punish a wrong done to him but does not, and bears it. The second is maraththal: removing the wrong from the mind altogether. Irappu here means a transgression, the wrong done to us. The one who forbears may keep the wrong in memory and hold his peace out of duty. The one who forgets frees himself within and gains real release.

Why is forgetting better? A person who merely endures may carry hatred in his heart. That hatred can grow into a burden inside him and harm him. One who forgets has no such burden. It is a state that does not come easily, but it can be grown by practice. Some commentators read maraththal not as completely wiping the memory but as keeping no grudge, and that reading also fits.

This is very useful in home and friendship. Relationships in which small faults are remembered for years and complained of turn bitter, while those in which people forgive and forget are renewed. To forget is not to justify the wrong; it is to refuse it a place in one's life. That forgetting is sometimes the greatest wisdom. It does not demand that we pretend to be unhurt, only that we decline to be governed by the hurt for the rest of our days.

A story

Rama and Kaikeyi

This incident is told toward the close of the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. After fourteen years in the forest Rama returned to Ayodhya in the Pushpaka aircraft. On the way he halted at the ashram of the sage Bharadvaja. Bharata had been ruling from Nandigrama in Rama's name with Rama's sandals placed on the throne.

On hearing that Rama had come, all Ayodhya filled with joy. People crowded the streets. The three queen mothers waited to welcome him. Kaikeyi stood apart. Thinking of the suffering her act had brought on Rama, the death of Dasharatha and Bharata's loathing, she stood with her head bowed in shame.

What did Rama do first after reaching Ayodhya? He entered his father's palace and bowed at the feet of all three mothers. There is also a tradition that he went first to Kaikeyi's palace and saluted her. Kaikeyi stood with tears. Rama lovingly called her 'Mother'.

There was not the least anger toward Kaikeyi in his heart. There was no complaint that she had caused his fourteen years of hardship. Earlier too he had said, "This is my fate, not Mother's fault." And before going to the forest he had taken leave of Kaikeyi with the words, "Mother, there is no grievance in my heart."

Rama not only bore the wrong; he forgot it. Kaikeyi's heart was softened by his love, and the family became one again. Rama's special greatness was to accept even one who had wronged him. His life testifies that forbearance is good and forgetting is better still.
