Explanation

Two kinds of people are compared in this verse. Oruththaar are those who punished or paid back harm done to them. Poruththaar are those who forbore a wrong. Valluvar points out how the world treats each. It does not count the avenger even as something, onraaga vaiyaare. But it wraps up and keeps the forbearing like gold. As we think of gold as priceless and not to be lost, people treasure the forbearing person and guard him.

The word podhindhu, 'wrapping', deserves attention. We wrap gold in cloth and place it in a box. In the same way the forbearing person is given a place of great value in people's minds. When he is in trouble many come forward to help, and many stand to protect his good name. The commentators take 'the world' to mean good people. The wicked may like an avenger, but the wise honour forbearance.

In daily life we all remember the person who stood calm in a harsh situation. Those who answered harsh words with harsh words we forget within a week. Over time the standing of the two kinds of people diverges in just this way. So by bearing for a few moments we can earn long-term respect. There is no loss of dignity in this, only a deferral of reward that arrives, as Valluvar promises, with interest.

A story

Shishupala and Krishna

This is the slaying of Shishupala from the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata. Shishupala, king of Chedi, was Krishna's cousin. When he was born he had four arms and three eyes, which frightened his mother Shrutashrava. A heavenly voice declared, "The one by whose touch his extra limbs vanish will also be his slayer." When Krishna touched the baby, he took a normal form. Shrutashrava pleaded with Krishna, "If my son does wrong, forgive him." Krishna promised to forgive a hundred offences.

Years passed. Shishupala grew up to hate Krishna and, on every occasion, spoke insultingly of him. Rukmini had once been proposed to him, and Krishna's taking her away made him furious. Tradition also holds that he set fire to Dvaraka when Krishna was away. Each time Krishna was patient.

When Krishna was given the first honour at the Rajasuya sacrifice, Shishupala rose and abused him fiercely. "Is this cowherd a king? Does one who tended cattle deserve first honour?" The assembly was angry, but Krishna sat quietly. Shishupala kept on, and the insults crossed a hundred.

Then Krishna rose and said, "I bore a hundred faults as I promised your mother. The hundred is complete." He sent his discus and struck Shishupala down.

During the time Krishna held his patience, the assembly honoured him highly. That a powerful man with the means to punish chose forbearance turned his fame into gold. The story testifies that those who forbear are treasured like gold.

What did I gain from a moment when I could have retaliated yet chose to hold back?
