Explanation

Renunciation is the leaving of attachments. Ascetics give up family, wealth and desires in pursuit of purity. Yet Valluvar says there are people purer than they: those who bear the harsh words of ones who have gone beyond bounds. This is a surprising claim. Giving up property and relationships is hard, but harder still is to keep the mind unshaken when others speak contemptuously. Irandhaar here means those who have crossed limits, who speak beyond the border of decency.

Ascetics live apart and so have fewer occasions to meet abuse. But a householder meets many people every day and faces their harsh words. To bear them without anger is, in Valluvar's view, true purity. Some commentators say the verse should not be read as scorn for ascetics but as using their purity as a yardstick to show the height of forbearance.

For householders today the verse is encouraging. It is not necessary to go to the forest for austerity. Everyone who bears the day's harsh words without anger is, in his way, performing tapas. At home and at work this silent austerity purifies a person from within. It costs no pilgrimage and requires no special clothes, only a decision, made again and again, to let a hard word fall without taking root.

A story

Bharata's Patience

This is the story of Bharata from the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. When Dasharatha died, Bharata was at his maternal uncle's house. Returning to Ayodhya on hearing the news, he learnt what Kaikeyi had done and was deeply shocked. He spoke sternly to his mother: "You are not my mother, you are my enemy." He refused to accept the kingdom and resolved to bring Rama back from the forest.

He set out for the forest with his army and the citizens. On the bank of the Ganga, Guha, the chief of the hunters, saw him and grew suspicious. "One who comes with so great an army may intend harm to Rama," he thought, and prepared his men to resist. Bharata, hearing of this, went personally to Guha and explained his purpose.

As the army neared Rama's hut at Chitrakuta, Lakshmana saw the dust it raised and became furious. "Bharata comes with an army. He comes to kill us. He has the kingdom and is still not satisfied," he said harshly, taking up his bow. Rama calmed him.

When Bharata came before Rama and fell weeping, Rama embraced him. But Bharata had already heard many harsh words: so many taunts because of his mother's act! Some doubted him, some abused his mother. Yet Bharata answered not a word. His mind was full of his own grief and his sorrow for what his mother had done.

When Rama refused to return, Bharata begged for his sandals and took them. For fourteen years he lived an ascetic life at Nandigrama. The elders praise the patience with which he bore harsh words as purer than that of ascetics.
