Explanation

Verse 60 ended with 'this stinking dog's head of mine'; this verse begins 'even me, a dog' in the same humility. But now there is no sorrow, only wonder: 'You valued even this dog as something of worth!'

Three gifts of grace: the Mother came by herself; she took him as her own before he even thought of it; and she gave him the knowledge to know her as she truly is. At the end he calls her 'Daughter of the Mountain' and 'sister of Vishnu'. In Tamil tradition the Mother is honoured both as the daughter of the mountain king and as the sister whom Vishnu gave away in marriage to Shiva.

The Chithirai festival tradition of Madurai and Alagar Koil

Kallazhagar Comes for His Sister's Wedding

From the Chithirai festival tradition of Madurai. The day came for the wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar. Tradition says that Vishnu, the bride's elder brother, set out from Alagar Malai to give his sister away in marriage.

Kallazhagar rides towards Madurai on a golden horse, welcomed by crowds all along the way. But before he reaches the river Vaigai, word comes that the wedding is already over. Alagar steps into the river, blesses the people there, and returns to his hill. Even today, lakhs of people gather to watch 'Alagar entering the river'.

In this festival brother and sister, Shaiva and Vaishnava, hill and city all meet. When Bhattar lovingly calls the Mother 'dear sister of the red-eyed Vishnu', it is the sweetness of this bond that he remembers.
