Meaning

Your sacred form, beyond the reach of word and thought, has stood revealed before my eyes and my karma. O Supreme, who rules by taking one half of the body of the Lord who burns Kama with his eye, so that the whole universe can tease him about his unbreakable vow of austerity!

Explanation

The previous verse ended 'gentle words' (panimozhiye); this begins 'word' (mozhikkum). The first two lines speak of great grace: the form beyond word and thought has revealed itself to Bhattar.

Then comes a sweet tease. Shiva is the great ascetic who burnt Kama with his eye, yet the Mother is half of his very body! She is so much a part of him that the whole world can laugh, 'Is this the one who conquered desire?' In truth, it tells playfully the deep truth that austerity and love, Shiva and Shakti, cannot be separated.

Shiva Purana, Shatarudra Samhita

The Lord Appears as Ardhanari So That Creation Can Go On

From the Shiva Purana. At the beginning of creation, Brahma created many beings, but they did not multiply; each creation simply came to a stop. Troubled, Brahma did penance to Shiva.

Moved by his penance, Shiva appeared in a wondrous form: half male and half female. On the right were matted locks and a tiger skin; on the left, flowing hair and silk. That is the form of Ardhanarishvara. 'Brahma, creation happens only when Shiva and Shakti come together,' he showed. Then the Mother brought forth a power from herself and gave it to the world, and after that, living beings multiplied.

The Mother being half the body of the ascetic who burnt desire is not just a tease; it is the very ground on which the world lives. This is what Bhattar praises: 'O Supreme, who rules by taking one half'.
