Meaning

I will cherish the Thiruppugazh I recite. When Yama seizes me with his noose, you will come and say, 'Fear not.' O nephew of the Lord who danced upon the great serpent! O warrior who rides the matchless plumed peacock that shatters mountains so that cruel Sura trembles!

Explanation

Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh songs are still sung all over Tamil Nadu. Here is the promise that Murugan himself will come to those who sing them and say 'fear not' at the last moment.

From the life of Arunagirinathar

'Muthai Tharu'

When Arunagirinathar fell from the tower, Murugan caught and saved him, wrote on his tongue with the spear and said, 'Sing of us.' 'What shall I sing, and how?' Arunagiri hesitated. Murugan himself gave him the first words: 'Muthai tharu'. From that came the first Thiruppugazh, and thousands of songs followed. Even today Thiruppugazh recitals begin with 'Muthai Tharu'.
