Meaning

The rooster that roars and shrieks so that the fish-filled sea dries up, the serpent king's heads tremble, the mountains quake, the summit of northern Meru cracks and crumbles, the lives of rutting elephants scatter and the sky and all the worlds break into pieces; then it splits the chests of the demons and stands and dances beating its wings. O holy rooster banner of Kumara Guruparan, who comes on the peacock that dances its sacred dance to the beat 'thikuda thikuda'; Murugan, son of blissful, pure Uma, the Supreme Mother, the Himalaya's daughter with a waist like a drum; companion of sweet-spoken Valli, daughter of the deer, and of Deivanai, raised by the elephant; who stays fixed in my heart!

Explanation

At the end of the verse come mridangam syllables, 'thikuda thikuda thithikuda': the singer sings the rhythm itself as words. It shows these verses were composed for musical worship.

From the Kanda Sashti tradition of Tiruchendur

The Soorasamharam

On the evening of the sixth day of Kanda Sashti in the month of Aippasi, hundreds of thousands of devotees gather on the Tiruchendur shore. Jayanthinathar sets out with his spear, and Sura comes again and again as the elephant-faced one, the lion-faced one and at last as Surapadman. Each time the spear strikes him down, the cry of 'Arohara' drowns the waves. At the end Sura becomes a mango tree and is transformed into the peacock and the rooster. The next day is the wedding of Deivanai.
