Meaning

O true Being, who made the Veda, so hard to recite, into Tamil! When Ranganatha, our Lord, asked with gracious words, good Kamban praised your feet and lovingly sang a hundred verses in fresh Tamil. Give me a heart that will recite them. This is my humble petition.

Explanation

'Odhariya vedham', the Veda hard to recite: learning the Veda is difficult, needing long practice, exact pronunciation and a teacher's guidance. Nammalvar gave its meaning in Tamil that anyone can recite, and Kambar sang a hundred verses in praise of that Tamil.

Now the author of this preface asks for something simple: 'Give me a heart to recite.' We may have the time and the book, yet the will to recite does not come. That will is itself grace. 'This is my petition' is the humble request of a devotee.

Life of Ramanuja, guruparampara tradition

Ramanuja Comes to Learn the Thiruvaimozhi

From the tradition of Ramanuja's life. Though Ramanuja was a great master of the Vedanta, he went to five teachers to learn the meaning of the Thiruvaimozhi. He studied it with Thirumalai Andan. Once Andan gave one meaning for a verse, and Ramanuja humbly offered another.

Andan was hurt at first: 'Alavandar never explained it so!' But later he learned that Alavandar had once given that very meaning. Delighted, he embraced Ramanuja: 'You say nothing Alavandar did not say.'

Even one who knew the Vedanta fully sat humbly as a pupil to learn the Thiruvaimozhi. Later he had his disciple Thirukkurugai Piran Pillan write the first commentary on it. Ramanuja himself is the best example of this preface's prayer: 'give me a heart to recite'.

நீங்கள் நன்கு அறிந்ததாக நினைக்கும் ஒன்றை, பணிவோடு மீண்டும் கற்கத் தயாரா?

Are you willing to learn again, with humility, something you think you already know well?
