Meaning

Because our father appeared at Kurugur, where the cool Porunai flows in many whirling eddies: the many scattered tongues found refinement; the many paths to liberation left their many ways and became one; and the many pits of hell, into which one never fails to fall, lay in ruin.

Explanation

How does the world change when a great soul is born? Kambar names three changes. Language was refined: the Thiruvaimozhi is Tamil at its height. The many paths became one: so many ways to liberation had been taught, and the Alvar showed one, complete surrender to the Lord. The pits of hell lay in ruin: for those who walked that path, they stood empty.

In the background the Porunai swirls along. Though a river runs through many eddies, it reaches one sea at last; so too the many paths reach the one Lord.

Guruparampara tradition (Life of Nammalvar)

The Child Who Did Not Cry, and the Tamarind That Never Sleeps

From Vaishnava tradition. At Thirukkurugur, the chieftain Kari and his wife Udaiyanangai long had no child. After praying to the Lord of Thirukkurungudi, a child was born to them on Vaikasi Visakam. But the child did not cry, did not drink milk, did not open its eyes. Because it was so unlike the world, they named it Maran, 'the different one'.

The anxious parents took the child to the temple of Adinatha Perumal. The child crawled to a tamarind tree in the temple grounds and sat in its hollow, and there it remained in yoga for sixteen years. Tradition says the tamarind is a form of Adisesha, the Lord's serpent bed, which never sleeps and never folds its leaves at night; so it is called the Urangaa Puli, the tamarind that never sleeps.

Tradition also says that when he was born, the vital air called 'sata', believed to plunge a newborn into worldly delusion, could not touch him; he drove it away in anger, and so he was called Sadagopan. The changes his coming brought into the world are what Kambar sings of in this verse. The tamarind tree still stands at Alwarthirunagari.

To reflect on

When is being 'different' from the world a weakness, and when is it a strength?
