Explanation

In this verse Kambar describes a feast. Nammalvar is the cook; verse is the rice; music is the side dish; Krishna is the one who eats. It was Nammalvar who sang, 'The rice I eat, the water I drink, the betel I chew: all are Krishna.' For him Krishna is food; for Krishna his songs are food.

The same feast is open to human beings too. The Thiruvaimozhi enters the ear, goes into the heart, and there 'stays and tastes sweet'. One taste is not enough; its sweetness lingers and lingers.

Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda

The Fruits Shabari Waited to Offer

From the Aranya Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. In the hermitage of the sage Matanga lived an aged woman ascetic named Shabari. Before her teacher left for the heavens he told her: 'One day Rama will come here. Serve him, and you too will attain the highest.' From then on, for years, Shabari swept the path every day and gathered fruits from the banks of the Pampa, and waited.

At last Rama and Lakshmana, wandering in search of Sita, came to her hermitage. Weeping with joy, she washed their feet and offered the fruits she had gathered, and Rama accepted them with love.

The food dear to God is food gathered with love. Kambar sang Shabari's story in his Iramavataram. In this verse he sings of Nammalvar heaping up his verse and music with the same love, as food for Krishna.

To reflect on

Could some small thing you did with love for someone still be 'staying sweet' in their heart?
