When Namperumal, with overflowing love, asked, 'Have you sung of our Sadagopan?', Kamban quickly sang a hundred verses of fine words in andhadhi form and kalitturai metre. O spotless one who made the Veda Tamil, grant that all hundred become clear to me, your servant. O my heart, pray to him!

Explanation

This preface joins a history and a prayer. The history: Ranganatha's question at the presentation, and Kambar's swift reply. The prayer: 'May those hundred verses become clear to me.'

Notice to whom the prayer is made: not to Kambar, but to Nammalvar, 'the spotless one who made the Veda Tamil'. The one who is sung must make the song understood. Our tradition bows first to the one at the heart of a book before reading it.

Srirangam temple tradition

The Kambar Mandapam and the Roaring Narasimha

From the tradition of the Srirangam temple. Tradition says that when Kambar came to present his Iramavataram, the Vaishnava elders set him many tests before accepting it. The presentation took place in the hall facing Ranganatha's shrine, today's Kambar Mandapam.

When Kambar sang the episode of Hiranyakashipu's death, some doubted whether it belonged there, since it is not in Valmiki. Then, tradition says, Lord Narasimha in the nearby Mettu Azhagiya Singar shrine roared aloud in approval. That shrine still stands near the Kambar Mandapam.

At that same presentation came Ranganatha's question, 'Have you sung of our Sadagopan?', and this preface records it. How Kambar answered, and what he learned from it, is told with the hundredth verse.
