Meaning

When it is said that these songs are the witness even for those who strive to see the hidden meaning of the Upanishads, what more is needed? Reflecting again and again on the ancient Vedas, the Lord of Kurugai, our Lord, gave birth to a threefold Tamil of the Veda: his poetry set to music.

Explanation

The meaning of the Upanishads is 'hidden': not easily seen by those who do not know Sanskrit, and not easily even by those who do. To those who long to see it, says Kambar, Nammalvar's songs can be shown as 'witness'. Later Vaishnava teachers did exactly this, citing the Alvars' hymns to explain the Upanishads.

The word 'eendraan', gave birth, is beautiful. The Alvar did not translate the Veda; reflecting on it again and again, he gave birth to it anew as a mother bears a child. That child grew up as verse, as music, and as drama in forms like the Araiyar Sevai.

Guruparampara tradition (Nammalvar and Madhurakavi)

If the Small One Is Born in the Belly of the Dead

From Vaishnava tradition. Madhurakavi, who had followed the light to Kurugur, found a young man sitting with closed eyes in the hollow of the tamarind tree. To see whether he was aware of the world, Madhurakavi dropped a small stone. At the sound the young man opened his eyes. Then Madhurakavi asked a riddle:

'If the small one is born in the belly of the dead, what will it eat, and where will it lie?' If the subtle soul is born in the lifeless matter of the body, what will it feed on and where will it rest? It is the question of the Upanishads.

The young man, silent for sixteen years, spoke for the first time: 'It will eat that, and lie there!' It will feed on that body's joys and sorrows and lie in that body; or, if it knows God, it will feed on God and rest in God. The whole meaning of the Upanishads was in that one line. Madhurakavi fell at his feet and became his disciple. It was the first moment that 'the hidden meaning of the Upanishads' appeared in Tamil.

சிந்தனைக்கு

"நான் எதை உண்டு, எங்கே இருக்கிறேன்?" என் மனம் நாள் முழுதும் எதில் ஊட்டம் பெறுகிறது என்று கேட்டுப் பார்க்கலாமா?

To reflect on

'What do I feed on, and where do I rest?' What does your mind feed on through the day?
