Meaning

What is now impossible for me, what is hard? Rama is the bowman whose arrows brought Ravana's golden crowns down to fill the sea. The Alvar of the Porunai's banks bowed his head beneath that Lord's two feet, embracing all things there. With a crown of words he placed upon him a thousand verses like nectar.

Explanation

Here Kambar joins the hero of his own Ramayana and the Alvar he praises in a single verse. Rama brought down Ravana's crowns with his bow. The Alvar, with his words, crowned Rama himself. There is a hint that the victory of words is higher than the victory of the bow.

With such an Alvar's grace on him, Kambar asks, 'What is now impossible for me?'

Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda

'Go Today, Come Back Tomorrow'

From the Valmiki Ramayana. In the war at Lanka, Ravana faced Rama directly for the first time. A fierce battle followed. Rama's arrows struck down Ravana's charioteer and his horses, cut his banner and broke his bow. At last an arrow cut down Ravana's shining golden crown.

Ravana stood without weapons, without chariot, without crown. Rama did not kill him. 'You are weary,' he said. 'It is not dharma to kill a weary man on the battlefield. Go back to Lanka and rest. Come tomorrow with chariot and bow, and then you will see my strength.' And he let him go.

Kambar sang this in his own Ramayana as 'Go today, and come to battle tomorrow.' In this verse he recalls those golden crowns brought down by the bow of Rama, who kept dharma even towards his enemy.

To reflect on

Why is it hard to show mercy at the moment of victory? Where have you seen it done?
