Meaning

To test the quality of gold, do you not need gold of equal worth? In poetic skill, is there anyone equal to you, against whom you could be tested? The four high kinds of poetry can only be spoken of after you. O lord of the south, of great cool Kurugur, crest-jewel of poetry and of music!

Explanation

Gold is rubbed on a touchstone and compared with a standard piece to know its quality. But what can the very finest gold be compared with? It has no equal. Kambar says the Alvar's poetic skill is like that.

It is worth noticing that Kambar, one of the greatest poets of Tamil, says this. He places even himself after the Alvar.

Tamil tradition (the story of Agastya)

Agastya Comes South

From Tamil tradition. When all the sages and gods gathered on Kailasa to see the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, the northern half of the earth sank and the southern half rose. To balance the world, Lord Shiva sent Agastya to the south, saying, 'You alone are equal to all of them.'

Agastya came south and settled on the Pothigai hills. Tamil tradition says it was Lord Murugan who taught him Tamil. Agastya framed a grammar for Tamil, and his disciple Tholkappiyar composed the Tholkappiyam. From the Pothigai hills where Agastya lived, the Thamirabarani river is born.

Kurugur stands on the bank of that same Thamirabarani, and there Nammalvar was born. The river from the hills of the sage who gave Tamil its grammar waters the town of the Alvar who gave Tamil its Veda. When Kambar calls him 'lord of the south, crest-jewel of poetry and music', he is thinking of this glory of the southern land.
