Tamil tradition (the story of Agastya)Agastya Comes South
From Tamil tradition. When all the sages and gods gathered on Kailasa to see the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, the northern half of the earth sank and the southern half rose. To balance the world, Lord Shiva sent Agastya to the south, saying, 'You alone are equal to all of them.'
Agastya came south and settled on the Pothigai hills. Tamil tradition says it was Lord Murugan who taught him Tamil. Agastya framed a grammar for Tamil, and his disciple Tholkappiyar composed the Tholkappiyam. From the Pothigai hills where Agastya lived, the Thamirabarani river is born.
Kurugur stands on the bank of that same Thamirabarani, and there Nammalvar was born. The river from the hills of the sage who gave Tamil its grammar waters the town of the Alvar who gave Tamil its Veda. When Kambar calls him 'lord of the south, crest-jewel of poetry and music', he is thinking of this glory of the southern land.
