Meaning

'Is he someone apart from us? He is a true and loving devotee.' Once my heart was not convinced of this; now I am convinced, as I ought to be. O lion among poets of pure Tamil! O sweet nectar for renunciants! O 'aani pon', gold of the purest standard, won by the Vedic sages of Kurugur, where the full Porunai river flows on and on!

Explanation

This is a verse of a change of heart. 'At first I did not believe; now I do,' says Kambar. The journey from doubt to faith is one many people share.

The image of 'aani pon' is apt. Goldsmiths keep one piece of the purest gold to measure the quality of all other gold. The Alvar is that measure; the purity of other devotees can be measured against him.

Guruparampara tradition (Life of Thiruvarangathu Amudhanar)

How the Ramanuja Nootrandhadhi Was Born

From Vaishnava tradition. Thiruvarangathu Amudhanar was the priest in charge at the Srirangam temple. When Ramanuja tried to reform the temple's management, Amudhanar opposed him. He thought of Ramanuja as an ordinary man.

Ramanuja sent his disciple Koorathazhvar to Amudhanar. Koorathazhvar's humility and kindness slowly changed Amudhanar's heart; when Amudhanar's mother died, Koorathazhvar helped with her last rites. Amudhanar met Ramanuja. Seeing his compassion, his heart changed completely, and he fell at Ramanuja's feet.

Later he sang the 'Ramanuja Nootrandhadhi', a hundred and eight verses in praise of Ramanuja. In it the feeling 'once I did not know you' comes again and again. To this day it is recited along with the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. This is the change of heart Kambar speaks of: once not convinced, now convinced.
