Naavalan theevil kavikal ellaam sila naalkazhiyap / Poovalan theevathu poalva allaal kurukoorppulavan / Kaevalan theengku aruppaan kavipoal engkum poaykkezhumik / Koovalan theempunalum kollumae vellam koalizhaiththae.

Meaning

All the poems of Navalam Theevu, this land of ours, wither after a few days like flowers fallen on the ground. But the poetry of the poet of Kurugur, which cuts away evil itself, is not like that. It goes everywhere and fills all places; as a flood, when it rises, takes in even the sweet water of the wells, it embraces everything within itself.

Explanation

Many poems are famous in their own day and forgotten after a while, withering like a flower fallen on the ground. But the Thiruvaimozhi has not withered with time.

The flood image is lovely. When a great flood comes, wells, ponds and small streams all merge into it. So with the Thiruvaimozhi: every other good thought finds a place in it; it embraces all.

Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda

The Ganga Brought Down by Bhagiratha

From the Valmiki Ramayana. The sixty thousand sons of King Sagara were burned to ashes by the wrath of the sage Kapila. For them to be freed, the heavenly Ganga had to flow over those ashes. Generation after generation tried and failed.

Their descendant Bhagiratha did severe penance, and Brahma agreed to send the Ganga. But the earth could not bear the force of her fall. Bhagiratha did penance again, and Lord Shiva caught the Ganga in his matted locks and released her gently in seven streams.

With Bhagiratha going ahead in his chariot, the Ganga followed him. Wherever she flowed, the land became holy, and towns, forests and fields flourished. At last she went down even to the underworld, flowed over the ashes of Sagara's sons and gave them heaven. Kambar says the Thiruvaimozhi is like that Ganga: it does not wither, it spreads everywhere and makes everything holy.
