Meaning

He mixed into sweet Tamil the Vedas that no one composed; he gathered a company of devotees around him at Kurugai; he is lord of the land that reaches to Kumari in the south. With compassion like rain, if he lifts me with his hands into heaven, he is the one who stood at its very border, called me in and gave me wisdom. Even there, I will serve only him.

Explanation

'He mixed the Veda into Tamil' is a lovely phrase. As a mother softens hard food and feeds it to her child, he softened the hard Veda in sweet Tamil and fed it to us.

The last line is a devotee's resolve: 'Even in heaven I will serve only him.' In Vaishnava tradition liberation is not rest; the bliss there is to serve God and his devotees for ever.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 3, Chapters 15-16

Jaya and Vijaya at the Gate of Vaikuntha

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. At the seventh gate of Vaikuntha, two gatekeepers, Jaya and Vijaya, served the Lord. One day the four child-sages led by Sanaka came to see him. Taking them for mere boys, the gatekeepers stopped them.

The angry sages cursed them: 'Though you live near the Lord, you have no humility; you will be born on earth.' Then the Lord himself came out. 'A fault by my servants is my own fault,' he told the sages humbly. Then he asked the gatekeepers: 'Will you have seven births as my devotees, or three as my enemies?'

Unable to bear separation from him even for a moment, they said, 'We must return quickly; three births are enough.' They were born as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, as Ravana and Kumbhakarna, and as Shishupala and Dantavakra. In each birth they were freed by the Lord's own hand and returned to their service at the gate of Vaikuntha. Kambar's resolve, 'even there I will serve him', is the same.
