Explanation

This couplet tells how society regards those who kill. Kolaivinaiyaraagiya maakkal are people who have taken up the work of killing. In the eyes of "those who discern lowness", they are pulaivinaiyar, doers of base deeds. Pulai here means lowness, baseness; it refers not to birth or caste but to the baseness of the act.

We must understand this couplet carefully. Valluvar does not regard any person as low by birth; he judges only by the act. The word vinaiyar, "doers of deeds", makes this plain: those who do a base deed. If one gives up that deed, the baseness is no longer in him. Many commentators explain it just so.

The phrase punmai therivaar means those with the discernment to separate what is high from what is low. Such people know the work of killing as base. That is, it does not give merely a general opinion; it gives the view of those who have knowledge and grace. In their view taking life is never an exalted occupation.

Thus Valluvar speaks not to despise anyone but to bring out the evil of the act of killing. As we read it we should not hate people but be revolted by the act. We should seek the way of turning people away from the evil deed and changing them.

A story

Pandu and the Mating Deer

The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata describes Pandu's hunt. Pandu was the younger brother of Dhritarashtra and king of Hastinapura. He was excellent in valour and archery. He went hunting in the forest on the slopes of the Himalayas with his wives Kunti and Madri.

One day in the forest he saw two deer coupled together. He aimed at them and shot an arrow. When the arrow struck, the deer spoke in a human voice. He was a sage named Kindama. He said he had been united with his wife in the form of a deer, and Pandu's arrow struck and killed him.

Kindama spoke sternly to the king: "O king, you were born in a great line. How could you do such a cruel act? Killing creatures in union is a baseness beyond killing. I curse you that you too will die at the moment of union with your wife." Saying this, he died.

Pandu was greatly grieved. He felt great shame and regret for his deed. He gave up kingdom and pleasures and took up an ascetic life in the forest. He lived with his wives free of luxury. That curse also prevented him from fathering children. Later, by Kunti's boon, the five Pandavas were born, as we know.

At last Pandu died at the moment he approached Madri, according to the curse. The truth of "Those who do killing are doers of base deeds" shows here. A killing done in one hunt changed the king's whole life. He himself realised the baseness of killing and gave up the kingdom.
