Explanation

This couplet compares wealth and killing. Nandraagum aakkam perithenum means wealth that appears to bring good, even if it is very great. But kondraagum aakkam, wealth that comes by killing a life, is saandrorkkuk kadai, the lowest to the noble, unacceptable.

Kadai here means the last, the degraded state. The noble push away such wealth however great. The word nandraagum deserves attention: such wealth may appear to bring good; it removes poverty, brings fame and helps relatives. Yet if killing is at its base, it is degraded.

It continues the idea of the previous couplet. There he said another's life is worth more than one's own life; here he says another's life is worth more than one's wealth. Though wealth improves life, if it comes by the way of killing it is lowly in the eyes of the noble. The measure of the noble is not the amount of wealth but the purity of the path by which it came.

In today's world wealth is gathered not only through direct killing but through trades that destroy others' lives, livelihoods and surroundings. Before accepting gain from such ways, this couplet makes us stop and think. We too can refuse the wealth that the noble consider lowest.

A story

Yudhishthira's Grief After the War

The Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata tells what happened after the Kurukshetra war. The eighteen-day war ended. The Pandavas won. But their victory came with enormous losses. Millions of warriors had died. Bhishma, Drona, Karna, Abhimanyu, Draupadi's sons and many others were no more. Yudhishthira was to ascend the throne.

But Yudhishthira did not rejoice in the victory. He sank in grief. "What happiness will a kingdom bring me which I got by killing my kinsmen and teachers? I do not want this kingdom; I will go to the forest and do penance," he said. He told his brothers and Draupadi of this thought.

Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, Sahadeva and Draupadi all pressed him to accept the kingdom. Vyasa, Krishna and Narada also advised him. But Yudhishthira's mind did not yield. Looking at those who fell at Kurukshetra, he asked, "Is wealth that came by their blood acceptable?"

Only after going to Bhishma on the bed of arrows and receiving his teaching on dharma did his mind clear. He accepted the kingdom as a duty. But that rule appeared to him not as a sign of joy but as the burden of responsibility. Later, the epic says, he performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice to try to wash away his sins, and finally left the rule and went on the great departure, the Mahaprasthana.

Yudhishthira's grief shows the truth of "Even if wealth is great, wealth that comes by killing is the lowest to the noble." Being noble, he did not joyfully accept the great victory and wealth gained through killing. Their losses weighed heavy on him.
