Explanation

This verse names three reckonings to run through the mind before beginning a task. The first is 'what is lost': the money, time and labour that will be spent and will vanish. The second is 'what is gained': the immediate benefit the task brings. The third is the 'profit that follows': the result that comes in the wake of the gain as time passes, the consequence of the consequence.

Classical commentators such as Parimelazhagar explain these as the loss of capital, the immediate profit, and the lasting profit. Some take the 'following profit' to include dangers that may appear later, a chain of effects. Whichever reading is chosen, the base is the same: one must not rush into a venture merely on the strength of quick gain.

When a trader opens a new shop he calculates rent, wages and stock; he also estimates the first month's sales. The one who goes further and imagines what his name and his customers will be like if the shop runs at that place for ten years has done the full reckoning.

The principle is not limited to commerce. In marriage, a change of work, borrowing, or moving to a new town, we may look through three eyes: loss, gain and what follows. Many undertakings begun with only two eyes have brought nothing but regret when the third eye opened. A moment spent in this kind of reckoning is the cheapest insurance a person can buy.

A story

The Stall at the Chithirai Festival

In a temple town near Madurai lived a young man named Sellaiyah. When the Chithirai festival drew near, he decided to set up a stall selling sundal, puffed rice and fruit. The festival days brought huge crowds. "In one week I shall see a whole year's earnings," he thought.

Before setting up the stall, he asked his father for advice. His father had run a stall near the temple for years. "My son, first write three sections on a sheet of paper. One: what will the stall cost? Two: what income will come in this one week? Three: what will happen afterwards?"

Sellaiyah wrote. Adding the fee for the spot, the stock and the helper's wages, he reckoned three hundred coins of expense. For the second he estimated an income of five hundred coins. But he did not know what to write in the third section.

His father smiled. "That is the most important one. When the festival is over, any stock left over will be wasted. But if the townspeople see the taste and honesty of your stall this week, they will come to you all year. Or if they are cheated once, the same people will not forget you."

Following that advice Sellaiyah bought stock in measured quantities. He used only good oil and fresh ingredients. Even when he could have made more profit by cutting the measure, he did not. When the festival ended, the income came close to what he had hoped for.

The result of the third section showed in the months that followed. The temple office invited him to prepare the weekly offerings. People in the town began to call his stall 'Sellaiyah's sundal'. Because he had weighed loss, gain and consequence together, a week's stall grew into the work of many years.

To reflect on

What decision are you weighing right now only by its immediate gain, with the third reckoning left blank?
