Explanation

This verse says simply that labour alone does not bring success. 'Aatrin varundhaa varuththam' means effort undertaken without the proper method. Such effort, however hard, will be 'poththuppadum', says Valluvar. This describes a vessel with a hole through which water leaks away. No matter how much is poured in, it never fills.

The phrase 'even if many stand by to help' is worth reflecting upon. For a task done in the wrong way, however many helpers there are, no benefit follows. The numbers of the crowd do not guarantee success. Where there is no correct method, a thousand hands joined together are in vain. This fits our times well. If a project has started wrongly, adding more money and more people only increases the loss.

'Aatrin' means 'by the proper way'. To know what tool, what sequence and what circumstances a task requires is to know the aaru, the path. Effort begun without that knowledge is lifeless sweat.

We see this in every field of life. In study, memorising without understanding wastes time. In business, producing heavily without studying the market leaves stock unsold. In health, intense exercise combined with a wrong diet shows little result. So before shedding sweat, one should make the path clear.

The verse is not an excuse for idleness; it asks that diligence be directed. Labour guided by the right method is the only kind that fills the vessel.

A story

The Churning of the Ocean of Milk

From the Puranas (Bhagavata and Vishnu Purana): Once the devas, cursed by the sage Durvasa, lost their strength and fortune. They appealed to Vishnu. Vishnu said, "Nectar lies in the ocean of milk. Make an agreement with the asuras and churn it out."

They chose Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. The devas stood on one side and the asuras on the other, pulling the rope. Thousands gathered and toiled. But as soon as they began to turn the mountain, it started to sink into the sea. There was nothing below to bear it.

Though so many laboured, an effort that was not rightly arranged began to go to waste. However hard they pulled, the rod would not turn and the ocean was not stirred. The asuras tired and the devas were dismayed. Fear arose in them that all their labour would come to nothing.

Then Vishnu took the form of a tortoise, the Kurma avatar. He went beneath the sea and bore Mount Mandara on his back. As the mountain stood firm, the churning began again, and now every pull bore fruit. First the Halahala poison rose from the ocean, and Lord Shiva drank it to protect the world. Then rose Kamadhenu, Airavata, the Kalpaka tree, Lakshmi, and finally Dhanvantari with the pot of nectar.

The story shows that even with a thousand hands pulling, an effort without a proper foundation sinks. Once the right support was set, the same labour yielded nectar. It is a luminous illustration of the verse: labour not done in the right way is wasted though many stand by to help.

To reflect on

In a project that is draining you, is the problem the amount of effort, or is something underneath missing its support?
