Explanation

Valluvar uses a farming picture here. A 'paathi' is a small plot of soil prepared for planting. A seed that falls there will sprout and grow. 'Pagaivarai paathippaduppathu' therefore means preparing a bed in which to make the enemy grow like a seedling. A man who sets out for war without a plan prepares the ground in which his enemy's victory can grow.

'Vagaiyara' means without method, steps or order. To set out without weighing how large one's own force is and how large the enemy's, where the field is and when the time is right, and who the allies are, makes strength useless even when it exists. Strength alone is not enough; it succeeds only when combined with order.

War here is a symbol. In any contest, lawsuit, debate or business, one who enters without preparation strengthens his rival. Each of his mistakes is used by the opponent to move ahead.

So when it comes to a quarrel, a clash or a competition, striking first under the drive of emotion is not victory. Lasting success belongs to the one who knows his own strength and the opponent's, and chooses place and time before he enters. The farmer does not scatter seed before preparing the plot, and the wise do not step on to the field before preparing themselves.

A story

Jarasandha Attacks Mathura

From the Bhagavata Purana: When Krishna slew his maternal uncle Kamsa, Jarasandha, king of Magadha and Kamsa's father-in-law, was seized with great anger. To avenge his daughters' grief at their husband's death, he marched against Mathura. He had a mighty army, but all his planning was driven by rage.

Krishna and Balarama had already studied how to defend Mathura. When Jarasandha came with his forces, they scattered the army. They spared Jarasandha himself; the Bhagavata says Krishna reckoned that if he kept returning with fresh armies, the earth's burden would be lightened by destroying them.

Jarasandha attacked seventeen times, and each time lost his army. Having learnt nothing from the earlier defeats, he came again by the same road. With every defeat, he only added to the fame of his enemies' victory.

On the eighteenth occasion, Krishna learned that another enemy, Kalayavana, was also about to come, and decided to protect the city. He built a new city in the sea and settled the Yadavas there. That was Dwaraka. By choosing a safe place at a fitting time he preserved the lives of his people.

Krishna's choice carried no cowardice; it was a calculated strategy.

Jarasandha's army was large, but because he rose without calculation, it only served his enemies. The verse's idea that marching without a plan prepares a bed for the enemy is clear in this story.

To reflect on

In a conflict you are facing, are you reacting out of anger, or have you measured the ground, the time and your own strength?
