The Possession of Patience, Forbearance · Poraiyutaimai

This chapter teaches that bearing insult and injury as the earth bears those who dig into it is the finest quality. The one who forbears earns lasting fame and honour, while the one who retaliates gets only a day's satisfaction.

Introduction

After Not Coveting Another's Wife comes the chapter on Forbearance, Poraiyutaimai. Household life means living with many kinds of people, and words and deeds we dislike are bound to meet us in family, neighbourhood and workplace. Valluvar shows in this chapter how to respond at such moments. Porai means bearing, enduring. It is not shrinking away but standing firm with strength.

The chapter opens with a famous image: as the earth bears those who dig into it, so to bear those who insult us is the supreme quality. The second verse goes a step further: it is good always to forbear a wrong, and better still to forget it. The third says the worst poverty is being unable to honour a guest, and the greatest strength is to bear with the ignorant. The fourth, fifth and sixth verses describe the fruits: if one wants a full and settled life one must honour forbearance; the world guards the forbearing like gold; the one who retaliates gets a day's satisfaction, the one who forbears gets fame until death.

The next four verses describe the higher forms of forbearance. It is good not to do wrong even to those who wrong us; even those who do great harm can be conquered by our own worth; purer than ascetics are those who endure harsh words from others; and greater than those who fast are those who bear unkind speech.

One might ask whether the chapter rejects all retaliation. Valluvar does not approve of wrong; he says only that wrong should not be answered by wrong. Where an offence must be corrected, the state and society have their role in giving punishment, which is a different subject. Here the concern is how an individual meets the insults, faults and irritations of everyday life. A habit of paying back makes a person restless, while forbearance brings inner calm and respect from others. In Tamil tradition, endurance is spoken of through many words, such as thaangudhal, aatrudhal and norral, and the very root of the word for a vow, nonbu, is this power of bearing. That is why in the last verses Valluvar compares forbearance with fasting and austerity: for him it is a mental discipline harder than any bodily penance.

Today forbearance may sound an old word. Yet for the rage that explodes on social media, the fights on the road and the wars of words inside families, forbearance is the modern remedy. One who forbears has not lost; he protects himself and his relationships. Valluvar's forbearance is not incapacity but chosen strength, and those who cultivate it win peace of mind and a good name.

Chapter story

Shiva Who Drank the Poison

This is the churning of the ocean of milk as told in the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana and Shiva Purana. The devas and asuras wanted the nectar of immortality, so they used Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope to churn the milky ocean. Vishnu, as a tortoise, bore the mountain on his back. In the years of effort the nectar did not come at first; other things appeared.

Suddenly a deadly poison called Halahala rose from the sea. Its fumes spread in all eight directions. Devas and asuras alike writhed from its heat and venom. The world seemed about to end. In fear they ran to Kailasa and appealed to Shiva: "Lord, save us, save the world."

Shiva saw their distress and took pity. With compassion he said, "Do not fear; I will deal with it." Parvati looked at his face. Shiva took the poison in his palm and prepared to drink it in one draught. The tradition says that since the worlds are within his body, Parvati grasped his throat so that it would not go down. The poison stayed in his throat, which turned blue. From that day he is praised as Neelakantha.

The world was saved, but the poison burned him. He accepted its cruelty with a smile and blamed no one, cursed no one. When the devas and asuras went back to churning, the nectar emerged, and they became absorbed in the struggle to divide it. They forgot the one who had borne their suffering, yet Shiva remained calm.

Parvati's part in the story is worth noting too. Her attempt to protect Shiva is a sign of love. But the heart that bears others' suffering out of love is Shiva's own. The blue throat is the sign, and every devotee who sees it remembers: the strength to bear is the sign of divinity. This is why Neelakantha is still worshipped in a special way in the temples of Tamil Nadu.

We may apply the lesson to daily life. A household stays at peace when one person absorbs a sorrow instead of passing it on. Society stands when parents bear their children's temper, the old bear the haste of the young, and a teacher bears a pupil's mischief. When each of us is a little Neelakantha, the world is protected. The mind that swallows its own poison rather than spitting it on others is the foundation of peace. If the cycle of retaliation is to stop somewhere, someone must swallow the poison, and this is what the story teaches.

This story shows that to endure suffering for the sake of others is the peak of forbearance. A heart that protects even those who have caused it pain is the finest porai. As the earth bears those who dig into it, Shiva bore the poison the world produced. His fame still resounds in every Shiva temple.
