Explanation

This verse speaks of firmness of mind that moves toward a good aim in the midst of hardship. Some works bring pain at first but joy in the end. Learning, exercise, tapas and labour are of this kind. Valluvar says one should not turn away from the pain at the start but continue with courage.

The word 'thunivaatri' means applying firmness and holding courage. It is clear that courage is the way to meet hardship. 'Inbam payakkum vinai' refers to work that finally yields joy. That is, it does not mean one must accept every suffering; this firmness is for work that gives good fruit.

Commentators differ slightly. Some take 'inbam' as the fruit at the end; some as the joy that comes to oneself and to others. Both together give the meaning.

The verse does not ask us to seek hardship. It asks for the temper that accepts unavoidable hardship as the price of a lasting joy, as one drinks a bitter medicine that heals. When the benefit is clear, the pain appears smaller.

A farmer ploughing in summer heat, a student studying through the night, a mother giving up her rest for a child's welfare: these are practical examples. A mind that looks not at the pain but at its end is a firm mind.

A story

Parvati's Tapas to Win Shiva

The Shiva Purana and Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava speak of Parvati's tapas. Parvati, born as the daughter of Himavan, is held by tradition to be the rebirth of Sati, daughter of Daksha. After Sati was gone, the Lord Shiva stayed in deep meditation. From childhood Parvati was firm that she would wed him alone.

The devas sent Kama to stir Shiva's mind, and Shiva burned him with the eye on his forehead. Seeing this, Parvati grieved but did not lose heart. She resolved to win him not by beauty but by tapas, left the comforts of the palace and went to the forest. The Purana says her mother Mena said, 'U ma, do not do tapas,' and so she got the name Uma.

In summer Parvati sat among four fires lit around her; in rain and cold she stood in water. Because she did tapas without even eating leaves she was called Aparna. Shiva came in the form of a young celibate student and tested her, speaking ill of Shiva. Parvati refused in anger and stood firm: 'My mind is on him alone.' Then Shiva appeared in his own form and accepted her.

The hardships of this tapas became the beginning of a life of joy for her. The marriage of Shiva and Parvati brought good to the world. This is 'thunbam uravarinum seyka thunivaatri inbam payakkum vinai'.
