Explanation

This verse shows firmness as the bridge between thought and attainment. It is easy to think of an aim. But for it to be fulfilled just as thought, the one who thinks must be 'thinniyan': firm and unwavering. If so, Valluvar promises, he will obtain what he has resolved in the way he resolved it.

The word 'enniyaangu' is worth noting. It means not only attaining but attaining in the very manner thought of. The firm person does not compromise along the way and spoil the goal. The word 'perin' recalls the condition: the promise holds only if firmness is gained. For those without firmness, a thought remains a dream.

There is a subtlety. The verse does not say any wish may be attained. Since this chapter follows the chapter on purity of action, good aims are what is intended. Some commentators read 'enniyaar' as one who thinks and acts with deliberation; for them it means firmness joined with careful weighing.

In practice, if a student wishes to become a doctor, the thought must be joined with firmness to study daily for years. If a woman wishes to raise her family through education, she needs firmness that does not stop when obstacles come. Where thought and firmness meet, the way to success opens by itself.

A story

Dhruva Rises by Tapas

The fourth Skandha of the Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Dhruva, and the Vishnu Purana also relates it. King Uttanapada had two queens, Suniti and Suruchi. Suniti's son was Dhruva. One day the boy Dhruva wished to sit on his father's lap. The younger queen Suruchi pushed him away: 'One not born of my womb has no place here. If you want a place, pray to the Lord and be born as my son in another life.'

The five-year-old boy went weeping to his mother. Suniti consoled him: 'My son, only Vishnu can give you a high place; take refuge in him.' Dhruva took his mother's word as his own resolve. He left home at night and went to the forest.

On the way the sage Narada saw him and tested him: 'Child, the forest is hard; go back.' Dhruva did not waver. Seeing his firmness, Narada gave him instruction and showed him the way to do tapas at Madhuvana on the Yamuna bank. First Dhruva ate fruits, then only leaves and water, and finally, holding his breath, stood on a toe in meditation.

His tapas shook the world. Vishnu appeared before him and touched his cheek with his conch, and the boy found clear speech. As he had wished, he was given an exalted place: an unmoving station in the sky, the pole star. He ruled for many years and then attained that place.

The five-year-old reached his aim because of his firmness. It is a beautiful example of 'enniyaar thinniyar aagap perin'.
