Explanation

The first couplet told the power of wealth; this one shows how that power shows itself among people. All scorn those who have nothing, and all honour the wealthy. It is worth noting that the word 'all' occurs twice. In scorning the poor, relatives and strangers unite, and likewise in praising the rich.

This is a couplet in which Valluvar looks at society plainly. He does not endorse the practice; he points out that this is how the world goes. Only those who know the pain and shame of poverty can fully feel the meaning of this couplet. It indicates that poverty hurts the mind more than the body.

Commentators read this couplet in two ways. In one view it speaks of the need to earn wealth. In another it points to a flaw in society and suggests that this habit of looking at wealth should be corrected. That is why in other chapters Valluvar speaks strongly of helping the needy.

So, while reading this couplet, we should ask whether we too are caught in the habit of scorning the poor. Only when we honour people as people, without looking at wealth, does society reach a good condition. The couplet also comforts the poor who are pained to hear it. It shows that the scorn is not their fault but the world's fault. It is the mark of the good, even after wealth has come, not to forget their former state and to treat the poor with affection. One may also take it as Valluvar's warning to the rich: remember that the honour you get is for your wealth, not for you.

A story

The Teacher at the Wedding Feast

This is an imagined tale. In a small town a big wedding feast was held. The bridegroom's family were wealthy. Kandasamy Mudaliar, a big landowner and moneylender of the town, came to the feast. He was given the highest seat in the front row and the first leaf.

At the same time the old teacher Ramasamy Aiyah, who had taught in the school for fifty years, arrived. In simple clothes, he stood with an umbrella in hand. The feast supervisor, without noticing who he was, said, 'There is room in the back row, sit there.' The teacher quietly went to the back and sat.

A young man seated in the front row saw this. In childhood he had been the teacher's student; he now worked in a large company. He rose, went to the teacher and bowed respectfully. 'Sir, why are you here? Please come forward,' he said, giving the teacher his own seat.

Those at the feast noticed it. The supervisor, ashamed, asked the teacher's pardon. Kandasamy Mudaliar also rose and folded his hands humbly, saying, 'He taught my children their letters too; I forgot.'

The teacher said with a smile, 'Son, the place where I sit is nothing to me. But the Tirukkural tells us that the world has the habit of giving places by wealth: all scorn the poor and all honour the rich. We should try to change that.'

From that day the custom grew in that town of giving first place at feasts to elders, the aged and teachers. The young man's small act changed the town's habit.
