Explanation

The earlier couplets told the power of wealth; in this couplet Valluvar turns to the way of gaining it. The way wealth came determines its fruit. 'Thiranarindhu theedhindri vandha porul' is wealth earned by proper and honest means. It yields dharma and also joy.

'Aran eenum' has two meanings. One is that honestly gained wealth helps to perform dharma such as giving and hospitality. The other is that, since coming honestly is itself dharma, earning so is a righteous act. In both senses dharma and wealth cannot be separated.

In 'inbamum eenum' there is peace of mind. Wealth that came by evil ways brings fear and guilt. One who earned honestly enjoys it with contentment. So joy lies not only in the amount of wealth but also in its path.

In 'thiranarindhu' the element of knowledge enters. Honesty alone is not enough; the couplet says the skill of knowing the means of earning is also needed. That is, one must seek wealth choosing the right occupation, the right way and the right time. Our tradition calls this wealth by the way of dharma. Valluvar speaks of it elsewhere too as that which yields dharma and joy. This idea is a good answer to those who see dharma and wealth as opposites. Every honestly earned coin gives a way to do dharma, to make the family happy and to help the country. So honesty in work is not only a personal virtue but also the practical wisdom of lasting wealth, since a clear conscience also protects health and sleep.

A story

Tuladhara the Honest Merchant

In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata comes the story of the sage Jajali and the merchant Tuladhara. Jajali was a sage who practised severe austerity. Once, when deeply absorbed in penance, birds built a nest on his head and laid eggs. He stayed still, waiting until the chicks flew away. Then the pride arose in his mind, 'There is no ascetic greater than I.'

Then a voice from the sky said, 'Jajali, the merchant Tuladhara of Kashi knows dharma better than you.' Jajali went in wonder to Kashi and met Tuladhara. Tuladhara was selling fragrant goods in a simple shop.

Tuladhara welcomed Jajali and spoke: 'However small my wealth, I earn it honestly. My weighing balance is always exact. I cheat no one. I show kindness to all beings. This is my dharma.' He pointed out that even in trade one can reach a high dharma.

He added, 'Dharma does not come from penance alone. The work we do each day, our word, our honesty and the compassion we show to others together make dharma.' Jajali, realising his pride, bowed to him humbly, says the Mahabharata.

This story is a living example of the couplet 'wealth that came by right means without evil yields dharma'. Tuladhara's honest wealth gave him dharma and contentment. His wealth was small, but its path was pure. The story says that honesty in one's occupation is as high as penance.
