Explanation

This couplet states three fine qualities of an army. The first is 'azhivindri', not knowing defeat. An army may lose, but its spirit must not. The second is 'araipokaadhaagi'; commentators take this as not being bought by gold given by enemies, or not betraying and leaving when strength wanes. The third is 'vazhivandha vankan', valour that came down through lineage.

Of these the middle quality, trustworthiness, is the most important. If a person can be bought by gold or position, an army cannot be led trusting him. The strength of an army lies not only in the number of its soldiers but in the confidence that they will stand firm.

The previous couplet praised the courage of the veteran army. Here trustworthiness is added to the same lineage-borne valour. Some explain 'araipodhal' as betraying from within against the state. In any case firmness and trust are the basis of an army.

Today we look for reliable members in an organisation or a team. Even with skill and knowledge, one without trustworthiness cannot be placed in an important position. This couplet states that simple truth. 'Vazhivandha vankan' is the valour cherished generation after generation. The feeling that a family must guard its forefathers' name gives the soldier firmness. It also strengthens the quality of not being bought, because none wishes to ruin the name of his lineage. A king should regard such an army as his great wealth.

A story

Karna's Unbreakable Loyalty

The Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata records Karna's firm loyalty. Before the Kurukshetra war Krishna went to Hastinapura as an envoy for peace. It ended in failure. On the way back he met Karna alone.

Krishna told Karna his true birth: 'You are Kunti's eldest son, the elder brother of the Pandavas. If you come with us, Yudhishthira will make you emperor. Draupadi too will accept you.' It was an enormous opportunity. Krishna offered him rule, family and fame.

Karna replied calmly: 'Krishna, I feel there is truth in your words. But it is Duryodhana who raised my life by making me king. When I was humiliated in youth, he gave me the kingdom of Anga. Today I cannot leave him.' He did not change his decision.

Kunti also went to Karna and asked him to join her sons. Karna respectfully refused her too. But he gave her a promise: he would not kill any of the four Pandavas other than Arjuna. In this way he kept both his loyalty and his respect for his mother.

This story is an example of the quality 'not corrupted'. Karna was not bought by wealth, kingdom or kinship. Tradition holds that though he knew his side was wrong, he did not break his gratitude. This shows both his greatness and his tragedy. This episode that teaches the value of trustworthiness is much discussed in the Mahabharata tradition.
