Explanation

'Vizhuppun' is a wound received in the front, that is, on the chest, in facing the enemy directly in battle. It brings honour to a warrior. A wound on the back is considered shameful. So the vizhuppun is the emblem of valour.

In this couplet the warrior goes a step further. He considers all the days passed without a wound as days wasted in his life. For the meaning is that on those days he was not fully engaged in his duty, did not fight, did not test his courage. A day spent with the sword in its sheath is an empty day to him.

This should not be taken as rashness. The warrior's wish for wounds means that he is always in front at his task without fearing the danger wounds bring. What is praised here is the attitude of counting a day without effort as a loss.

We can apply this to our lives too. Days passed without engaging in work, effort or challenge may be regarded as wasted days. A life that does not meet useful hardships does not grow. In Sangam literature there are songs where a mother grieved and would not accept a son wounded on the back, and rejoiced at seeing a son wounded on the chest. Valluvar here makes the same outlook the life-reckoning of the individual warrior. He measures his lifetime by wounds, because a wound is proof of his courage. This view teaches us today the worth of daring efforts.

A story

Adithan Who Counted His Scars

This is an invented story, set in the culture of a southern temple town. On the bank of the Kaveri, in a town built around a great Shiva temple, lived an elderly warrior, Adithan. From his youth he had served in the kingdom's frontier force. On his chest and shoulders were seven great scars. Each was received in front; not one was on his back.

On a festival day the townspeople gathered in the temple courtyard. A boy asked, 'Grandfather, so many wounds on your body? Did it not hurt?' Adithan laughed. 'Every scar is a reckoning of one day I lived. If on the days I received no wound I merely ate and slept, I would not count that day in my life,' he said.

He went on: 'On frontier guard I did not fight daily. But every day I was watchful. On days without wounds I also helped the townsfolk and trained the young. I do not call those days wasted. But a day that does not test courage does not satisfy me.'

The young men listening thought about themselves. Many spent their days in dance, song and fun. They came forward to be trained by Adithan. He taught them not only sword and spear but also vigilance, responsibility and courage.

This story illustrates the couplet 'he counts as wasted all days on which he received no honourable wound.' To regard a day passed without effort and courage as wasted is the pride of the warrior.
