Meaning
Not understanding the guise the Lord had taken, thinking 'I am the guardian of the world', calling falsehood truth, I roamed the world seeking an unshakable resolve. Then my Father hid within me and came behind me in grace. He made me unaware of both myself and Him; He watched my pride of 'I and mine'; He went everywhere into everything, entering where I entered and leaving where I left; by destiny He brought forth great enjoyments for me; like my own servant He never left me; watching my play, as if saying 'Run, and come back', He stood in my own way. Alas! Then, because His grace was abundant, He came to Thiruvarutthurai and gave grace full of meaning, became the foe of falsehood, and spread His name 'Meykanda Devan' so that the sea-girt world might know, 'See it for yourself'. Hiding within Himself, He came to the front; making me nothing, He became Himself and all that is His; He gave me Himself and gave me myself; He showed His own non-doing and my absence of doing. The way He came to me, O Mother, fills me with wonder!

Explanation
This is one of the most moving poems of Irupa Irupathu. Through birth after birth the Lord stays with the soul, gives it experiences in keeping with its desires, and stands watching as it runs about at play. This is tirodhana sakti, the grace that stays hidden and feeds the soul its karma. When ripeness comes, the same Lord steps forward as guru and reveals Himself. 'He gave me Himself and gave me myself' is the subtle point of Siddhanta liberation: the soul is not destroyed; it receives its own true nature and receives the Lord as well. Manikkavasagar sang the same: 'What You gave was Yourself; what You took was myself.'
