Meaning
While Brahma and the other gods bowed and rose, Vishnu, who measured the three worlds with two strides, the tall Lord with the shining crown whom the sages of the four quarters praise with all five senses blossoming, once longed to know the foot and the head of the Lord. He became a fierce, mighty boar, bored down through all seven worlds, grew weary, and cried 'First of the ages, victory, victory!', yet still could not see those flower-like feet. How did those feet become easy for me to praise in this world bound by the long sea? This is how:
I escaped the karma of every flawless birth from elephant down to ant. In human birth, in my mother's womb, I escaped the war of the worms. In the first month, when I was the size of a thanri nut, I escaped splitting in two. In the second month I escaped failing to hold together. In the third month I escaped the flood of fluid there. In the fourth month I escaped the great darkness. In the fifth month I escaped dying. In the sixth month I escaped itching and pain. In the seventh month I escaped falling to the ground. In the eighth month I escaped the crushing. In the ninth month I escaped the suffering that comes. In the due tenth month I escaped through the ocean of sorrow that I suffered with my mother. Year by year I escaped many dangers that came in their time. I escaped the dirt of morning, the hunger of harsh noon, the sleep of night and the dangers of the road.
I escaped the plunder of the sharp eyes of young women with dark hair, red lips, white smiles and the grace of the dark peacock. In the wide ford of the mad world, I escaped desire like an elephant in must. I escaped the many seas called learning. I escaped the misery called wealth. I escaped the old poison called poverty. I escaped the many paths with petty boundaries.
Then a thought called 'God' arose in me, and the moment I fixed my mind on that one thing free of anger, six crore powers of maya began their many different tricks. Close friends and strangers gathered and talked unbelief until their tongues were callused. The old herd of cattle called kin seized me, called me back and panicked. The Vedic priests firmly showed the scriptures, saying vows alone were supreme. The debaters of the faiths quarrelled, crying that each of their own was the right one. The fierce storm called Mayavada swirled, struck and roared. The deadly venom of the shining snake called Lokayata spread in many forms. In all this the great maya surrounded me in many ways.
Even so, never letting go of what they held, like wax that has seen fire, they worshipped with melting hearts, wept with trembling bodies, danced, cried out, sang and praised; like the pincers and the simpleton that never let go of what they grip, they stood as they were, with good, unbroken love, firm as a nail driven into green wood; their tenderness swelled and they churned like the sea; their hearts softened, their bodies shook; the world laughed at them as madmen; they lost all shame and wore the blame of their countrymen as an ornament; they did not waver; they lost all cleverness and, in a knowing madness, held the goal they reached to be supreme and wondrous; they cried and trembled like a cow that has lost its calf; they did not think of another god even in a dream; they did not scorn as something small the greatness of the formless Supreme who came down to earth as the guru and gave grace, but followed his feet before and behind like a shadow that never parts, without tiring, in that one direction; their bones wasted and melted, they pined again and again, the river called love overflowed its banks; their good senses became one, they cried 'Lord!', their speech faltered, their hair stood on end, the flowers of their hands folded, their hearts blossomed, their eyes overflowed with joy and fine tears welled up. Praise to you who became a mother and raised those who make their unfading love grow every day.
Praise to the God who came as a Brahmin who gives the truth and can lend a hand so that karma is destroyed. Praise to the king of golden Madurai. Praise to the jewel of a guru who shines in Koodal. Praise to the dancer in the hall of southern Thillai. Praise to you who have become rare nectar for me today. Praise to the first one of the four ageless Vedas. Protect me, golden mountain, praise to you. Ah, ah, grant me grace, praise to you. You create, you protect, you wipe away: praise to you. Praise to my father who removes distress.
Praise to Eesan; praise to the Lord; praise to the mass of radiant crystal; praise to the king; praise to the nectar; praise to the wondrous one with fragrant feet; praise to the Vedic one; praise to the spotless; praise to the first; praise to knowledge; praise to the goal; praise to the fruit; praise to the lord who holds the river in his matted hair; praise to my owner; praise to awareness. See, I the lowest am your slave: praise to you. Praise to the father; praise to the atom; praise to the Saiva; praise to the leader; praise to the sign; praise to the virtue; praise to the path; praise to the thought. Praise to the medicine hard for the gods to obtain; praise to the Lord easy for others to reach. Praise to the king of grace who keeps my kin of twenty-one generations from sinking into cruel hell. Praise to the friend; praise to the companion; praise to life itself; praise to my treasure; praise to the free one; praise to the first; praise to the father; praise to Haran; praise to the One beyond word and feeling; praise to the harvest of this sea-girt world; praise to the beauty easy to reach in its rareness; praise to the eye that became a dark raincloud; praise to the lasting mountain of grace. Praise to the hero who made even me into someone and placed his great feet on my head.
Praise to you who wipe away the sorrow of hands joined in worship; praise to the ocean of undying bliss; praise to you beyond perishing and becoming; praise to the first one who is beyond all; praise to the bridegroom of the doe-eyed Goddess; praise to the mother of the gods in heaven. Praise to you who spread in the earth as five; who came to be in water as four; who shone in fire as three; who rejoiced in air as two; who arose in space as one. Praise to the nectar in the hearts of those who love. Praise to you, hard for the gods to reach even in dreams; praise to you who gave grace to me, a dog, while I was awake.

Resolve to take me as yours and give grace: praise to you. Give grace here, saying 'Do not fear': praise to you. Praise to you who gladly took poison as nectar. Praise to the father, to the lord, to the eternal, to the spotless, to him who belongs to devotees, to Bhava, to the great one, to the master, to the rare one, to the pure one, to the path that came in a Brahmin's guise. Is this fair? I cannot bear it, First One: praise to you. Praise to my kin, to my life, to my glory, to Sivam, to the handsome one, to the bridegroom, to the partner of her whose feet are soft as cotton. I, a dog, have wandered and suffered; I am your servant: praise to you. Praise to our Eesan, the shining flame; to the eye at Suvaithalai; to the king who fills Kuvaippathi; to the ruler of the hill country; to Arikesari full of the arts; to the treasure of Thirukkazhukkunram; to Haran of Poovanam set among hills; to you who became both formless and form; to the near mountain of compassion; to the flame beyond even the fourth state; to the clarity hard to discern; to the light of an unpierced pearl; to the lover of those who became your servants; to the nectar that never cloys; to the gracious one; to the Lord of a thousand names; to you who wear a garland of thaali and arugu grass; to the dancer who is a long light; to the beautiful one smeared with sandal paste; to Sivam beyond thought; to you who dwell on the great mountain of mantras; to you who take us and save us.
Praise to you who gave grace to the deer that sucked the tigress's breast; to you who walked upon the wave-tossed sea; to you who gave grace that day to the black bird; to you who consented that the great senses be stilled; to the dancer who danced to fill the world; to you who became beginning, middle and end; to you who gave the Pandya king the highest state, so that he entered neither hell nor heaven nor this earth; to the One who fills all without a gap; to the king of Sivapuram rich with flowers; to the God with the garland of red water lilies; to you who cut away the delusion of those who worship. I, a dog who knows no way and no chance at all, have woven this garland of melting words: accept it in grace, praise to you. Praise to the ancient one who burned the many cities; praise to the Supreme, the light beyond the beyond.
