Meaning

I have done no penance; I have not offered cool flowers and bowed without fail. I am a man of hard karma, born in vain. I have not reached the wealth of Sivam that your lovers gain. O supreme beyond the supreme, grant your servant a birth that is given to your feet.

Explanation

In the previous verse he longed for death; here he asks for birth itself, but a birth 'given to your feet', a life spent in the Lord's service. Whether birth is a curse or a blessing depends on what it is used for. Thirunavukkarasar too sang that even human birth is worth wishing for in this world, since only in it can one see and worship the Lord.

Calling himself one who has done neither penance nor worship is the way of devotees. Grace hurries not to those who come with their merits but to those who confess they have none.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.

To reflect on

If you were born again, what would you want that life to be spent on? Could you begin it in this one?
