Meaning

As the way to your holy feet, I do not let my heart soften, I do not melt in love, I do not garland and praise you, I do not speak of your glory. O king of the gods! I do not sweep your temple or smear its floor, nor dance for you. I only rush toward death, and still I try to reach you by mere cleverness.

Explanation

Sweeping the temple, smearing its floor and stringing garlands are the services of the path of charya, the first step in Saiva practice. Appar went from temple to temple with a weeding hoe, and this humble 'uzhavaram' service is still honoured. Manikkavasagar scolds the mind that does none of these small things and still hopes for the highest gift.

The word 'cleverness' is sharp. To think one can reach God by wit and fine words rather than by love is itself a deception. As a former minister he knew the taste of such cleverness well.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.
