Meaning

O mountain of gems set in fine gold, our owner! Like an actor in a play I put on the look of your devotees, and in their midst I hurry with great eagerness to slip into your home, the state of release. Grant me love for you that never breaks, so that it stays deep within me and melts me from inside.

Explanation

The second ten are called 'Arivuruthal', instructing oneself. They open with hard honesty: 'I act the part of your devotees.' Manikkavasagar exposes the mind that wants to slip into release in the crowd of true devotees without having their love.

Saiva Siddhanta values the melting of the heart above any outward show of devotion. So what he asks for is not release but 'love that never breaks'. When love comes, release follows by itself; this is what Thirumular means by 'Love is Siva'.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.

To reflect on

Have you ever acted out a feeling you did not truly have? Isn't admitting it the first step to change?
